  • An Art Made of Trust, Vulnerability and Connection | Marina Abramović | TED Talks

Marina Abramović's art pushes the boundary between audience and artist in pursuit of heightened consciousness and personal change. In her groundbreaking 2010 work, "The Artist Is Present," she simply sat in a chair facing her audience, for eight hours a day ... with powerfully moving results. Her boldest work may still be yet to come — it's taking the form of a sprawling art institute devoted to experimentation and simple acts done with mindful attention. "Nothing happens if you always do things the same way," she says. "My method is to do things I'm afraid of, the things I don't know, to go to territory that nobody's ever been." Leader of the Radicals Vojislav Seselj announced on Thursday that he would try to obstruct Mogherini during her speech on Serbia's development towards the European Union, stating that she lobbies for Kosovo and Albanians, and that she is leading anti-Serbian politics. Radical party MPs also chanted "Serbia- Russia, we don't need EU." Besides the Serbian Radical Party, members of the political party 'Dveri' showed their hostility towards Mogherini by holding posters reading in Serbian and English "Serbia doesn't trust Brussels." Eng/Serbo-Croat/Nat The influential Serbian Orthodox Church recognized Slobodan Milosevic's opponent Thursday as Yugoslavia's new president-elect, urging him to take control of the country in a peaceful way. The church appealed to opposition challenger Vojislav Kostunica for restraint during a meeting of the Holy Synod, its highest body. It appealed to Kostunica and his camp to "take over the helm of the state, its parliament and municipalities, in a peacefully and as dignified a manner" as possible. The statement came the morning after more than 200 thousand joyful Milosevic opponents swarmed the capital's downtown district, waving banners and chanting "He is finished". The statement signed by Serbian Patriarch Pavle was read to journalists by Justin, episcope (bishop) of Timok region. SOUNDBITE: (Serbian) "In the sign of joy that the September 24 presidential, parliamentary and local elections in our fatherland finished in peaceful and dignified way, the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox church calls Vojislav Kostunica and all his elected officials to take over the State, the Parliament and municipalities in the same peaceful and dignified way, according to the election results which are the proof of the trust of the people they belong to." SUPER CAPTION: Justin, episcope of Timok region The biggest demonstration ever against Milosevic completely blocked Belgrade's main streets around Republic Square - much of the downtown area teemed with people. The opposition threatened widespread "civil disobedience" as means to pressure Milosevic to step down after his government released final election figures showing neither candidate won a majority - the requirement for an outright victory. Opposition candidate Vojislav Kostunica finished first in Sunday's elections with 48.96 percent to 38.62 percent for Milosevic, the State Election Commission said late Wednesday. That would require a runoff on October 8. An opposition member of the electoral commission said the head of the body presented the 13 members with the results late Wednesday without allowing them to inspect the returns. He said 300 of the more than 10 thousand polling stations never reported, and he accused the commission of reducing the overall total by 600 thousand votes. Some members of the election commission reportedly resigned from their posts, due to "pressures they were under to falsify the results," media reported. Opposition leader Goran Svilanovic said on Thursday that the opposition bloc was not surprised by the election figures released by the federal electoral commission. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Now, I cannot say that this is something that we are surprised about. They have announced preliminary results two days ago, and this is what they have announced: that it should be another round of presidential elections. We don't accept and it's something that is obvious to all of us - we want to see what are the real results in the ballots. What we going to do in the next days is we shall insist to check what are the real results. We are inviting the electoral commission to do the same with the evidences we have. Of course, we are going to discuss the strategy for the further activities, we are going to do it today. What I think will be a part of strategy, I can say now, it is we shall evade any possibility of violence, we will not let them involve all of us in any incidents or something similar that was happening years ago." SUPER CAPTION: Goran Svilanovic, opposition leader The atmosphere in Belgrade suggested that the pro-democracy Serbs no longer fear Milosevic's autocratic government, sensing that he may not be able to hold on much longer. Wide of an election billboard standing on a street in Belgrade, graffiti on wall reading (Serbian Cyrillic) "My Belgrade" STORYLINE: Serbia''''s bid to join the European Union will be strongly tested at this weekend''''s general election that pits ruling pro-Western democrats against nationalists who are promising jobs, economic revival and closer ties with Russia. Held in the shadows of the French and Greek ballots, some seven (m) million voters in Serbia will choose a president, a 250-seat national parliament and local councils - a triple vote held amid deep economic problems, joblessness and widespread discontent over rapidly falling living standards. Sunday''''s balloting is key for Serbia''''s plans to become an EU member, after being an isolated pariah state in the 1990s''''. It also could determine whether Serbia will continue reconciling with its neighbours, including the former province of Kosovo which declared independence in 2008. The two leading contenders are the pro-EU Democratic Party and its leader Boris Tadic, who resigned as president to make way for an early presidential election, and Tomislav Nikolic, whose populist Serbian Progressive Party has Russia''''s support.
